Time blocking is the practice of dividing your day into named blocks and deciding ahead of time what each one is for. Instead of working from an open to-do list, you give each task a home on the calendar.

Why it matters

A to-do list tells you what to do but not when; time blocking forces the harder, more honest question of when it will actually happen. It also protects deep work by reserving space for it before meetings and messages fill the day.

How to apply it

  • Block your most demanding work into your highest-energy hours.
  • Give admin and email their own blocks instead of letting them leak everywhere.
  • Leave buffer blocks for overruns and the unexpected.
  • Re-block, don't abandon, when the day goes sideways.
